Republish Our Stories

Anywhere there is a pop up “republish”, we encourage the free republication and sharing of our work. Republishing is hereby permitted under a Creative Commons license and in accordance with the following policies:

Notify us: Please email us at republish@proofnews.org to let us know if you’ve republished the story.
Give credit where it is due: Proof News and any co-reporting partners must be credited. In the byline, we prefer “Author Name, Publication(s).” At the top of the text of your story, include a line that reads: “This story was originally published by Proof News.” If online, you must link the words “Proof News” to the original URL of the story on proofnews.org.
Original Links: If you’re republishing online, you must link to the original URL of the story on Proofnews.org, include all of the links from our story, including our newsletter sign up language and link.
Social Media: If you share republished stories on social media, we’d appreciate being tagged in your posts. We have official accounts for Proof News on most platforms as indicated on the bottom of this page, including [LIST and or links?]
Do not edit the article: The complete, unaltered article text must be published. Our material cannot be edited, except to reflect relative changes in time, location and editorial style. (For example, “yesterday” can be changed to “last week,” and “Portland, Ore.” to “Portland” or “here.”)
Translation: We do not generally permit translation of our stories into another language. If you wish to translate the article, please contact republish@proofnews.org for approval.
No republication of photos or other images: Our photographs and illustrations may not be republished without specific permission. Please contact republish@proofnews.org.
Canonical metadata: If you use canonical metadata, please use the Proof News URL. For more information about canonical metadata, click here.
Free access: Do not sell access to this article or place it behind a paywall. Our stories may be posted on pages that include ads, but not those specifically sold against our stories.
No affiliation: There can be no express or implied implication when you republish that donations to your organization support the work of Proof News.
No additional rights: No rights to sell, license, syndicate, or otherwise represent yourself as the authorized owner of our material to any third parties are granted. This means that you cannot actively publish or submit our work for syndication to third party platforms or apps. Proof News acknowledges that publishers cannot fully control when certain third parties automatically summarize or crawl content from publishers’ own sites.
Only individual article republishing: You may not republish our material wholesale, or automatically. Stories must be selected to be republished individually.
No search engine optimization: Our work may not be used to populate a website designed to improve rankings on search engines or solely to gain revenue from network-based advertisements.
